Shetland in Point Reyes

Gudrun Johnston and Mary Jane Mucklestone

October 12-15, 2018

We Retreat to the wild and remote edges of Tomales Bay to host Gudrun Johnston and Mary Jane Mucklestone - the Shetland Adventurers.  This is the first time they have offered a Retreat in the United States and you will not want to miss it.  The opportunity to enjoy intimate Learning Sessions and Knitting Circles with these masters can be found nowhere else.

We will explore the intricate details and deep history of the Shetland/Fair Isle traditions.  Prepare to be immersed in both the construction and patterns of traditional haps and the incredible color of traditional and modern Fair Isle design.

Brooke Sinnes of Sincere Sheep is joining us and is one of our Northern California Fibershed founders and producers.  She will be showcasing her yarns throughout Retreat as well as developing the fibre we will use in our Learning Sessions.

By locating this Retreat within the rich palette of the environment and history of the Norther California coast we will be surrounded by and enjoying the fruits of agricultural and ocean life.  This lifestyle  and connection within the natural world is reflected in the rooted Shetland environment -  and we will examine how the modern evolution of this concept has developed right here in Northern California.  In this way we will deepen our own understanding and practice of our craft.

Prepare for your trip

Comfortable,  casual clothing is perfect - include walking shoes.  The weather on the coast in October is typically fog free, and mild to warm temperatures are pretty reliable.   It is always good to observe the Bay Area mantra and dress in layers and also to pack a waterproof jacket.  A headlamp or flashlight is a good idea.  There is no TV, so reading materials are suggested - and your knitting of course!  No candles, incense or pets please.

WHAT'S INCLUDED? EVERYTHING!!!

Lodging for 3 nights

McCargo Hall for our group throughout the Retreat

Three full meals per day
