Accommodation & Rates
This Retreat will be held over five days at the private Sugar Bowl Lodge in Truckee, California. This historic location at the foot of Donner Peak has been in operation since 1939 and prides itself on its authentic community based experience. One of the oldest ski resorts in California, Sugar Bowl has a storied past with ties to Austrian ski culture, Hollywood and Walt Disney. This special place helped bring skiing to “sunny California,” was home to the state’s first chairlift, and the west’s first ski gondola. We will revel in the summer Sierra glory - abundant light, sunshine and clear mountain air - and the unique luxury of having it all to ourselves.
There are a variety of flexible room options at The Lodge to accommodate single, double or multiple people sharing. So bring a friend - or a few friends - select a room that suits you and manage your costs accordingly. Rooms at the Lodge for all Retreat participants are guaranteed. While the widest variety of room choices will be possible the sooner you make a reservation, rest assured that there will be a room for you. Our hope is that by organizing it this way, you can book your Retreat to secure your spot, and then work out travel and accommodations that work for friends and/or groups that want to come together.
Rates: $159.00 per night for single or double occupancy. Additional occupants will incur a small additional cost (around $40 per person).
Reservations will be handled personally and directly with The Lodge at Sugar Bowl and the dedicated number to use is (530) 426-6742
Please note: This is a residential retreat, so all participants are required to stay on site at Sugar Bowl together (what a treat!!).

Prepare for your workshop
Pack your needles and notions and your hiking boots! All yarn supplies for this Retreat are included. The Muslin Sweater will be knit using Quince and Co's Lark - a yarn chosen for its gauge integrity and ease, as well as a weight to facilitate completing the knitting requirements during the timeframe. Full instructions about selecting your yarn color and quantity will be provided. In addition, there will be a 'swag project' specifically for Retreat participants --- you can begin it at the Retreat if you have the leisure, or take it home to complete at leisure there but no need to pack an extra project! Prepare to be introduced to a very special skein of yarn.
This Retreat will have swatching homework preparation to be done before arriving in the Sierras. Elizabeth will provide clear instructions and directions to participants in plenty of time to arrive with a washed and completely dried swatch ready to be measured. The Retreat will involve plenty of knitting (the goal is to leave with our Muslin Sweaters) and lots of support to get it done. Familiarity with the following techniques is helpful: Short rows; Picking up stitches; Increases: yo, M1L, M1R, LLI, RLI, kfb, kfbp, M1p, pfkb; Decreases: K2tog, K2togtbl, ssk; backwards loop cast on, cable cast on, knitted cast on, provisional cast on. Elizabeth will provide links to these techniques before the Retreat so you can prepare. Remember .... we will have lots of help and support at the Retreat.
With all that knitting, we will need to stretch our legs and lungs. So we will take breaks to enjoy some hiking and exploring in the area. Sugar Bowl is located at on Donner Pass at the foot of Donner Peak at about 8,000 ft. This location tempts us to get outside and revel in the joy of the High Sierra environment and we have every intention of taking full advantage of that! Elizabeth looks forward to sharing her 'backyard inspiration' with all of us as we hike and explore Donner and Truckee.
